Sending email over SSL not working

Tns 5 months ago updated by Luca 4 months ago 8

To have emails sent securely we must send email over SSL (or use startTLS). While it worked in the past, it doesn’t work anymore (at least for me)! When I click on « Sent Test Mail » I get a Gateway Timeout message.

I know that the Smtp, username and password are correct since if I UNchecked « Use SSL » and set port to 587, emails are sent correctly. I also tried sending over startTLS by simply checking « Use SSL » and keeping port 587 but I get a lengthy error message related to « Authentication failed »!

As a last resort I decided to use the option « Place email into this specified directory for pickup by an external application ». Click the « Send Test Mail » results in the creation of a eml file as expected. Unfortunately, it seems Screen Connect doesn’t always use the setting specified! For example, trying to send a support email to a guest results in a message telling me my IP is on a blacklist. While this is my problem, Screen Connect should have simply created a file! The same problem is observe with triggers.

All my tests have been done on the latest version (20.3.31734.7778 ) of ScreenConnect

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, I'll contact support.

I had similar problem in the past, and support hadn't been able to solve "unrecognizing the problem".

I "solved" on my own by placing a mail relay in the middle, that can properly handle SSL.

Hi Luca,

I would like to try your approach. Did you follow a guide/tutorial to help you out with the configuration of the mail relay? Also, how did you configure Screen Connect mail?

Thank you very much

Hi Tns.

I run ScreenConnect in Docker. I've just uploaded a sample compose file.

You can find the repo here: https://github.com/kenayagi/docker-screenconnect

ScreenConnect is than set to send mail through a relay named "relay".

Thank you very much. I have no knowledge of Docker, but I will give it a try when I have a little bit of time.

Not sure what this docker thing is all about.  I think I'd be sorta cautious as screenconnect uses a random generated SID for the unattended clients and such.  If you use this docker install -- im not sure if this sid is being randomly generated on this docker install or if everyone is just going to get the same SID.

This is a good objection. The docker container take advantage of local volumes for persistent storage, so I'd think that the SID is different for each setup. But I can test it. Can you point me to the location where such SID is saved?

(or you can file an issue on github - and possibly a solving PR - if you want)
