Headless Ubuntu throws exception

Stefan 3 years ago updated 3 years ago 9

Hi all,

just installed SC 6.4 client on a Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (GNU/Linux 4.4.0-63-generic x86_64) headless machine with the "ScreenConnect.ClientSetup.sh" command.

But the headless machine doesn't appear under our SC access list and the log /var/log/screenconnect is showing:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NullPointerException
        at com.screenconnect.client.Program.main(Program.java:74)

Is anything missing? Any ideas to troubleshoot?

Thank, Stefan.

I'm still not having any trouble installing/connecting to a headless Ubuntu VM using your client resources. Since you've submitted a ticket with support, one of our technicians should be reaching out to you to continue troubleshooting in your environment.

Since this behavior doesn't reproduce in our environment, I'm marking this thread as not a bug.

Waiting for information

Good morning Stefan,

Please update this thread with the version of Java installed on the machine on which you're seeing the null pointer exception.

Regards,

Ben

Good morning Ben,

is this what you are looking for?

openjdk version "9-internal"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 9-internal+0-2016-04-14-195246.buildd.src)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 9-internal+0-2016-04-14-195246.buildd.src, mixed mode)

Thanks for providing an update. I was unable to reproduce the behavior you describe on one of our internal Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS VMs with openjdk9 using the 6.4.15083 client install shell script -- the client installed without issue and called back to the server.

Please provide additional details about your Control setup to facilitate additional troubleshooting:

1) Are you using a cloud hosted instance of Control or an on-prem install?

2) If on-prem, what server OS are you using?

3) Have you made any customizations to your client resources or app.config settings? If so, in what ways have these been customized?

4) Does the client install if you use the standalone deb instead of the shell script?

Regards,

Ben

Below the answers to your questions:

1) We're using an on-prem install.

2) OS information:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
Release:        16.04
Codename:       xenial

3) Can't say it exactly. How can we find the differences of original and our settings?

4) We tried both ways of installation (deb and shell script). Both are resulting into the same error

Best regards,

Stefan

Is it possible to start the host client by hand manually to get a verbose output?

Please zip up your server's /opt/screenconnect/App_ClientConfig directory and upload it to the following sharefile:

Ben,

with support's help we could determine the problem:

We used wget to pull the URL for our access client. Since there are ampersands in that URL, the wget will not work as expected, but after building the installer and used SCP to move the client to the Linux server it worked.

Therefore I want to ask you again wether this is a bug or not.

In my point of view I want to install SC on headless linux machines in that cases I don't have dirct access over SSH (SCP). How to download the access client in the right and easiest way?

Regards,

Stefan
